Microsoft has unveiled a new version of its Edge browser, enhanced with advanced artificial intelligence features, positioning it as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s recently launched AI browser, Atlas.
The tech giant has integrated Copilot into the latest Edge release, transforming it from a simple extension into an intelligent, dynamic assistant that accompanies users throughout their browsing experience.
Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, described the new product as a smart, interactive companion. In his announcement post, he wrote that Copilot in Edge is evolving into an AI browser capable of understanding open tabs, summarizing and comparing information, and even performing actions such as booking hotels or filling out online forms.
The announcement comes just two days after OpenAI introduced its own AI browser, Atlas. Although Microsoft’s new Edge update had been in development for months, the timing of both launches highlights the growing competition in the fast-evolving AI technology sector.
According to TechCrunch, the similarities between Edge and Atlas are partly functional, as users generally prefer clean, minimalist browser designs. There are also limited ways to integrate an AI chat window within a new tab interface, resulting in comparable layouts.
However, the key distinction between the two browsers lies in their underlying AI models. While both share similar features, the race between Microsoft and OpenAI underscores the intensity of the current AI innovation landscape.
