Microsoft Accuses Iran of Interfering in US Elections

Microsoft has accused Iranian-linked hacking groups of attempting to interfere in the upcoming US presidential elections by using fake news websites.

This claim adds to ongoing concerns about foreign influence in American elections, which Iran has previously denied.

According to a report released by Microsoft, the company has observed increasing evidence that Iran is trying to impact the 2024 presidential race.

The report details two primary forms of activity by Iranian-linked groups. First, these groups have established and are actively promoting influence campaigns aimed at hot-button election topics, particularly targeting swing states to provoke controversy and sway voters.

Second, they have initiated operations intended to gather intelligence on political campaigns, potentially to assist in future election interference.

One specific tactic mentioned in the report involves Iranian groups setting up covert news sites targeting both ends of the American political spectrum. Evidence suggests that these sites utilize AI-supported services to copy content from U.S. publications.

Microsoft also identified another Iranian group preparing for more extreme activities, including intimidation or incitement of violence against political figures or groups.

The ultimate goals of these actions appear to be sowing chaos, undermining authorities, and creating doubts about election integrity.

Additionally, Microsoft revealed that hackers, using a former official's compromised email, have been sending links to high-ranking American officials to steal information about their online activities. 

For instance, attempts were made to access the email of an unnamed former US presidential candidate.
