Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Sunday announced his candidacy for the US presidential election in a campaign video.

“I’m running for president to defeat Donald Trump and rebuild America. We cannot afford four more years of President Trump’s reckless and unethical actions. He represents an existential threat to our country and our values. If he wins another term in office, we may never recover from the damage," The billionaire said in a statement.

Bloomberg's campaign is a late participation in the Democratic primaries with historic spending on national advertising, expressing concern that none of the top candidates could defeat Trump.

The campaign has already allocated more than $ 30 million of television ads, the largest advertising spending in the history of US primary elections.

His first ad showed his performance as mayor after the September 11 attacks and his efforts on  arms control, climate change, as well as health insurance and other issues.

Under the slogan "Rebuilding America", the ad included words like "Job creator, leader, problem solver, Mike Bloomberg for president."

This month, the billionaire set up a campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission and has qualified for elections in at least three states.

Bloomberg follows an unconventional strategy bypassing the first four states of the primary season, including Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina to play for the so-called Super Tuesday states in early March.

He announced that his campaign would be fully self-funded, meaning he could not qualify for democratic presidential discussions under current rules, which required candidates to receive at least 10,000 donations.

Bloomberg, 77, hold an estimated net worth of $ 58 billion, most of which has accumulated from providing news, data, business and markets analysis to over 350,000 subscribers worldwide, including a radio and a magazine "Business Week".
