Archaeologists in eastern Mexico have uncovered a rare pre-Hispanic structure and stone carving unlike any previously documented in the region, in a discovery described by President Claudia Sheinbaum as highly significant.
The find, located at the Campo Viejo site in Veracruz, includes a platform decorated with circular stone elements and a massive carved stone slab believed to depict figures linked to the ancient Maya civilization.
Researchers from the National Institute of Anthropology and History said the architectural features date to the Early Classic period, between 200 and 600 AD, and have no known parallel in the area.
The discovery also includes a 1.88-meter-high stone panel featuring two carved figures. Archaeologists described the site as unique, while the Mexican government pledged funding for further research and restoration efforts.
