Mexico’s World Cup 2026 campaign came to an end in the Round of 16 after a 3-2 defeat to England at the historic Azteca Stadium, making them the second host nation to leave the tournament after Canada.
England secured their place in the quarter-finals after a dramatic victory over Mexico in the early hours of Monday, ending the hopes of the home crowd and keeping their own title ambitions alive.
Mexico had entered the match with strong support from their fans and the advantage of playing on home soil, but they were unable to overcome an organised and decisive England side.
The defeat marked a painful end to Mexico’s campaign, as supporters had hoped the national team could use home advantage to make a deep run in the tournament and deliver a historic achievement.
Mexico now join Canada among the host nations eliminated in the Round of 16. Canada had earlier exited the competition after losing to Morocco.
The result leaves the United States as the only remaining host nation still competing in the knockout stages of the World Cup, which is being held across the United States, Canada and Mexico until 19 July.
England, meanwhile, continue their World Cup journey and will now face Norway in the quarter-finals.
Mexico’s exit represents another major setback for the tournament’s host nations, with two of the three co-hosts already out before the final stages.
