Mexico announced on Monday that it is awaiting a new response from Google regarding its request to return the name "Gulf of Mexico" in full to the Google Maps service, before taking legal action against the company.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated during her morning press conference that she received an official letter from Chris Turner, Google's vice president of government affairs and public policy, in which he explained that Google will not change its policy after US President Donald Trump announced naming the body of water the "Gulf of America".
Sheinbaum added: "We will wait for Google's response, and if there is no change, we will resort to the judiciary."
Currently, the name appears on Google Maps in different ways, as it is called "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico, and "Gulf of America" in the United States, while it appears globally with a double name: "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)".
In his letter, Turner said Google is adopting this designation in accordance with long-standing mapping policies to ensure neutrality and consistency across all regions, noting that the company is prepared to meet directly with the Mexican government to discuss the issue. Turner explained in the letter that the company's long-standing policy is to consult multiple reliable sources to ensure an accurate and up-to-date geographic representation of the world.
