Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly called on the United States to guarantee that deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro receives a fair trial following his dramatic capture and transfer to the United States.

In comments addressing the unfolding legal proceedings, Sheinbaum stressed that, now that Maduro is in detention, Mexico expects his rights to due process and a just legal hearing to be upheld. She emphasized that justice must be seen to be done in accordance with international legal norms.

Sheinbaum’s remarks came amid heightened regional tensions following the extraordinary operation that removed Maduro from power and brought him to face charges in a U.S. court. The Mexican president said her government is monitoring the situation closely and urged global actors to respect legal standards and the principles of fairness.

In addition to stressing the importance of a fair trial, Sheinbaum reaffirmed Mexico’s longstanding principle of non-intervention and respect for national sovereignty. She reiterated that Latin American nations should determine their own political futures without external interference, underscoring that Mexico rejects any foreign intervention that undermines the self-determination of states.

Sheinbaum’s stance reflects regional unease about recent developments and reinforces Mexico’s commitment to diplomatic engagement over unilateral actions. Her remarks also signal a push for legal protections and human rights guarantees at the international level as Maduro’s legal case progresses in the United States.
