Meta officially announced the end of the desktop version of its popular messaging app, Messenger, for both Mac and Windows devices.

The decision will take effect starting December 15.

According to a report by TechCrunch, users will no longer be able to log in to Messenger via the desktop app after that date.

Instead, Meta will redirect them to use Facebook’s website to access messaging services.

Messenger’s official support page confirms that users still relying on the desktop app will receive an in-app notification once the shutdown process begins.

Meta explained that the move aims to give users enough time to adjust to alternative platforms before the service is fully discontinued.

Windows users can currently rely on the official Facebook desktop app, while both Mac and Windows users can continue accessing Messenger directly through their web browsers without downloading any additional software.

The company also encouraged users to enable Secure Storage and set up a PIN to back up their chat history before transitioning to the web version, assuring that all messages will remain accessible once users log in through Facebook.
