Social media giant Meta has decided to lift the remaining restrictions on former US President Donald Trump as he prepares to run against the incumbent President Joe Biden in the upcoming November election.
This decision marks a notable shift in Trump's access to major social media platforms.
Trump's posts were banned on major social media platforms in early 2021 following the Capitol riot by his supporters. However, his accounts on Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram were reinstated in 2023.
Meta announced in a blog post on Friday that the enhanced suspension penalties related to Trump's repeated violations would be removed after the Republican Party formally nominates him as their candidate at the upcoming national convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, next week.
The company emphasized the importance of allowing political expression, noting that the American public should have the opportunity to hear from presidential candidates.
However, Meta clarified that presidential candidates would still be subject to the platform's community standards, including policies designed to prevent hate speech and incitement to violence.
