Meta Platforms launched a new application called Seller, designed to provide specialized sales tools for merchants and traders who use Facebook Marketplace to sell products, as the technology giant moves to strengthen its position in the competitive e-commerce sector.

The new application comes as Meta seeks to expand the capabilities of Facebook Marketplace, which was launched a decade ago after increasing shopping activity within Facebook Groups created demand for a dedicated buying and selling platform. The marketplace has since become a major commerce channel, generating revenue through promoted listings and advertising features.

Through Seller, Meta aims to improve the experience of professional sellers and compete more effectively with major online marketplaces such as eBay. The company said the platform currently features around 430 million product listings every month worldwide, highlighting the scale of activity taking place across Facebook Marketplace.

The Seller app is designed to work alongside existing Marketplace accounts, automatically transferring current product listings, customer messages and sales records. It provides merchants with artificial intelligence-powered tools to help create product listings, a unified messaging system to communicate with buyers, and inventory management and analytics features that offer insights into sales performance.

Meta said the application is currently available through Apple’s App Store for users in the United States aged 18 and above. The company is also testing a web version of the service for users who download the mobile application, suggesting plans for broader accessibility in the future.

Alongside the Seller launch, Facebook is introducing Facebook Verified, a free verification service aimed at confirming that personal accounts belong to real individuals. The verification process includes submitting a selfie image as part of Meta’s efforts to improve safety, reliability and trust across its platforms.

The launch follows Meta’s continued expansion into specialized digital services, including the introduction of the Forum application in May for Facebook Groups users. With Seller, the company is seeking to transform Facebook Marketplace into a more advanced commerce platform by combining artificial intelligence, seller management tools and stronger verification systems to support businesses and individual merchants.
