German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her anger after supporters of US ongoing President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol building, blaming Trump for not admitting defeat by his rival, Joe Biden.
In a meeting with German conservatives, Merkel said, "We all saw yesterday the disturbing images of the storming of the US Congress, these pictures angered and saddened me as well."
"I regret that President Trump has not admitted his defeat (in the presidential elections) since November and also yesterday," she added.
Moreover, Merkel described pro-Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol as “attackers and rioters," expressing her confidence in the inauguration of Biden as US President within two weeks.
On Wednesday, supporters of Donald Trump stormed a congressional session held to endorse Joe Biden’s victory, as a last-minute desperate attempt by Trump to reverse his election loss led to chaos and accusations of an attempted “coup.”
Officials at the U.S. Capitol building announced the closure, and lawmakers said on Twitter that they were sheltering in their offices, as protesters – some of them carrying Trump flags – were seen walking through the building.
