In an unprecedented move, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump is set to chair a session of the United Nations Security Council on Monday, marking the first time a First Lady has ever presided over the council. The appearance was announced last week, prior to the United States declaring war on Iran.

According to Melania’s office, the First Lady “will make history at the United Nations by presiding over the Security Council as the United States assumes the presidency of the council, emphasizing the role of education in promoting tolerance and global peace.”

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated that Melania’s event will be the first time a First Lady or First Gentleman has chaired a Security Council meeting. The United States holds the council’s rotating presidency for the month of March.

Trump’s wife has previously been involved in diplomatic efforts, particularly in initiatives aimed at securing the release of Ukrainian children abducted to Russia.

This development comes amid escalating conflict in the Middle East. The United States and Israel recently carried out strikes against Iran and reportedly assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei along with several senior officials last Saturday. Iran subsequently responded by targeting sites in Gulf countries.

The Security Council had convened an emergency session last Saturday following the attack, during which heated exchanges took place between the Iranian and Israeli representatives.
