The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, welcomed recent announcements by a number of countries — including Malta, Canada, Australia, Andorra, Finland, Iceland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Portugal, and San Marino — expressing their intent to recognize the State of Palestine.
The Council described the move as a “historic and significant step” toward achieving justice for the Palestinian people and ending decades of suffering. It praised the growing international momentum in support of Palestinian rights and aspirations.
In its statement, the Council renewed its call for the international community to take immediate action to halt the ongoing aggression in Gaza, protect civilians, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. It also urged an end to forced displacement and starvation policies targeting Palestinians, reaffirming the people’s legitimate right to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
