The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, on Tuesday strongly condemned the Israeli government’s approval and legalization of 19 settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling the move a flagrant violation of international law.
In a statement, the council said the decision represents a dangerous escalation that undermines prospects for a just and comprehensive peace, warning that continued settlement expansion erodes the foundations of any viable political solution.
The council renewed its call on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities, work to end the suffering of the Palestinian people, and ensure their legitimate right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement reaffirmed the council’s support for international efforts aimed at achieving a fair and lasting peace based on justice and international legitimacy.
