More than 1,000 hectares of farmland have been damaged by volcanic activity from Mayon Volcano in the Philippines, according to the country’s space agency.

The agency revealed that satellite data showed severe damage affecting around 1,039 hectares of rice fields and an additional 191 hectares of other agricultural crops following volcanic flows and ashfall linked to the eruption.

Officials said the affected agricultural area is roughly equivalent in size to Mandaluyong.

Authorities also reported that approximately 158 kilometers of roads were impacted by volcanic ash, disrupting transportation and local infrastructure in several areas surrounding the volcano.

The Philippine space agency noted that satellite assessments remain partially limited due to heavy cloud cover, warning that some regions obscured during imaging may still contain undiscovered ash deposits.

Earlier this month, more than 300 families were evacuated after massive ash emissions rose from Mayon Volcano following the collapse of lava deposits along its slopes.

Standing at 2,462 meters high, Mayon Volcano is considered one of the Philippines’ most famous tourist attractions because of its near-perfect cone shape. However, it is also recognized as the country’s most active volcano among the nation’s 24 active volcanic systems.
