The Mauritanian Coast Guard has rescued 77 irregular migrants off the country's coast, bringing the total number of migrants saved in Mauritanian waters over the past 10 days to 503.
In a statement, the coast guard said the group rescued on Thursday was travelling aboard a traditional wooden boat and included migrants from several African countries.
Authorities added that multiple groups of migrants heading toward European shores have been intercepted in recent days after departing from neighboring countries.
Mauritania has become a key transit route for migrants attempting the dangerous journey across the Atlantic to Europe, prompting increased maritime patrols and rescue operations.
