Mauritania has confirmed its first death from Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in the southern border city of Rosso, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health published by the Mauritanian News Agency.
The ministry said the victim, a Mauritanian who had recently returned from a neighboring country, was admitted to the hospital with severe hemorrhagic symptoms. He was immediately isolated, and laboratory tests later confirmed the RVF infection.
Authorities have identified ten people who came into contact with the patient, none of whom have shown symptoms so far. An emergency committee has been formed to investigate the situation.
At the same time, a special team from the National Centre for Public Health Emergency Operations (Malaz) has been deployed for further monitoring and research.
Rift Valley Fever typically emerges after rainy seasons, especially in rural areas where people are in close contact with livestock and mosquitoes.
