A man was killed in a shooting early Friday morning in the Anderlecht district of Brussels, an area that has witnessed multiple gun-related incidents in recent days.
According to local authorities, the shooting occurred around 4 a.m. in the Peterbos neighborhood.
Police have not yet identified the victim, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the attack. A judge and forensic experts have been dispatched to the scene.
Officials suspect that the recent surge in shootings is linked to rival drug trafficking networks vying for territorial control.
On Wednesday, Anderlecht Mayor Fabrice Cumps called for stricter monitoring of illegal arms trade following another shooting outside Clemenceau metro station.
Brussels has seen a dramatic rise in gun violence in recent years. In 2024 alone, authorities recorded 89 shootings in the Brussels-Capital region, many tied to drug-related conflicts. By comparison, 43 shootings were reported in the area at the end of 2023.
