Former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi passed away on Monday, at the age of 85, according to his family.
Abdullah was Malaysia's fifth prime minister, and he held this position in 2003, following the resignation of veteran leader Mahathir Mohamad after 22 years campaign.
Abdullah died at the National Heart Institute in the capital Kuala Lumpur, according to his son-in-law and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
Abdullah was admitted to the medical facility on Sunday after having medical complications, including breathing difficulties.
He was under intensive care, the institute said in a statement.
It added: "Despite all medical efforts, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones."
