Malta has become the first country in the world to provide nationwide access to ChatGPT Plus after signing a new agreement with OpenAI.
Under the program, all Maltese residents will be eligible to receive one year of free ChatGPT Plus access after completing a training course focused on artificial intelligence and practical AI usage.
The initiative is scheduled to begin in May and is expected to expand gradually as more citizens complete the free educational program.
Officials confirmed that the scheme will also be available to Maltese citizens living abroad.
In a statement released by OpenAI, Maltese Economy Minister Silvio Schembri described the project as a step towards transforming artificial intelligence from a complex concept into a practical tool for families, students, and workers.
The agreement marks the first time a national government has partnered with OpenAI to provide large-scale public access to ChatGPT Plus services.
Neither OpenAI nor the Maltese government disclosed financial details related to the deal.
