The General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces has announced that its military units have successfully recaptured the northeastern town of Anéfis following an intense terrorist attack. The successful operation marks a critical defensive turnaround after a week of heightened insurgent pressure on government military installments across northern and central Mali.

According to official military communiqués, government forces intervened rapidly to stabilize the security situation in Anéfis. The counter-offensive comes exactly one week after a coordinated wave of extremist groups targeted key military bases in the cities of Anéfis, Gao, and Sévaré, alongside smaller outposts in the towns of Aguelhok and Kéniérouba.

The Malian military confirmed heavy casualties among the insurgent factions during these multi-city clashes. According to verified combat logs, government troops neutralized 20 terrorists in the city of Sévaré and six more in Gao. On the government side, officials reported that one friendly soldier was killed in action, while four others sustained injuries during the active firefights.

Combing Operations Against Al-Qaeda Affiliates

In a statement published on its official website, the Malian military detailed its ongoing tactical strategy in the region:

"Following the establishment of complete operational control over the town of Anéfis, the Malian Armed Forces, in close coordination with international partners, are continuing to consolidate their defensive positions. Troops are actively executing thorough combing operations across the sector, specifically targeting armed terrorist elements belonging to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA)."

The military command added that a highly precise airstrike was deployed during the consolidation phase, successfully eliminating an additional five militant fighters in the desert periphery.

Support From Russian African Corps

The latest operational breakthroughs build upon a series of aggressive counter-terrorism actions executed over the weekend. The General Staff noted that Malian army units, acting with direct tactical support from the Russian African Corps, neutralized nearly 100 armed insurgents and destroyed 12 pieces of heavy military equipment during separate border engagements.

Mali has faced a persistent, decade-long security crisis involving routine guerrilla attacks launched by JNIM—a major regional coalition directly affiliated with the Al-Qaeda terrorist network—and ethnic Tuareg separatist factions fighting under the banner of the Azawad Liberation Front.
