The Maldives government has announced plans to tighten its anti-smoking laws by introducing new legislation that would ban the sale of cigarettes to anyone under the age of 19.

President Mohamed Muizzu said in a statement following a cabinet meeting on Sunday that the new law is scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2025.

Details regarding penalties for violations have not yet been disclosed.

Last November, the Maldives raised the legal age for tobacco consumption from 18 to 21.

The country also imposed a ban on the manufacture, sale, distribution, promotion, and possession of electronic cigarettes within its territory as part of broader efforts to curb smoking.
