On Monday, Egypt’s Minister of Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Nabila Makram met EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship Ylva Johansson during her current official visit to Egypt.

During their meeting, the two high-ranking officials discussed joint priorities to be achieved in partnership with the European Commission to enhance the mainstreaming of immigrants' protection within EU and Egypt's policies and operations as well as addressing migration-related challenges and opportunities, in the short and longer-term.

They also discussed the issues of Egyptians stranded in light of the Coronavirus crisis. In this regard, the Egyptian Minister underscored the fruitful efforts made by Egypt to deal with the issues of the migrants and workers who were impacted by the awful pandemic, adding that her ministry is in constant contact with Egyptian immigrants and citizens abroad.

Also in that context, Makram affirmed the importance of looking at the humanitarian conditions of migrants in light of the crisis caused by the Coronavirus.

Johansson's visit came a week as the Commission and Egypt's Government were pursuing new initiatives under the New Pact on Migration and Asylum.
