Large parts of the Dominican Republic, including the capital Santo Domingo, were plunged into darkness on Monday after a major failure struck the national electricity grid.

The state-owned transmission company, Empresa de Transmisión Eléctrica Dominicana (ETED), confirmed in a statement that a significant fault occurred in the interconnected national power system, disrupting electricity services across several regions of the country.

An AFP correspondent in Santo Domingo reported widespread outages in parts of the capital. ETED said technical teams were working to gradually restore power.

The blackout comes just four months after a similar nationwide outage left most of the Caribbean nation without electricity for nearly five hours in mid-November.

That disruption affected major areas including Santo Domingo and the tourist hub of Punta Cana, causing severe traffic congestion and suspending metro services in the capital for hours.

Power outages are a recurring issue in the Dominican Republic, sometimes lasting up to 10 hours. Authorities attribute the problem to a combination of inadequate maintenance, technical failures, and illegal power connections.

Officials have yet to disclose the precise cause of the latest grid malfunction, as restoration efforts continue.
