A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Saturday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences.
The seismic event occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers, the research center reported, increasing the likelihood of strong ground shaking near the epicenter.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
Papua New Guinea lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions, and frequently experiences moderate to strong earthquakes. Authorities continue to monitor the situation for possible aftershocks.
