A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck western Japan on Saturday evening, according to the national meteorological authorities, though no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake occurred at 6:28 p.m. local time and was recorded at a depth of around 70 kilometers beneath Nara Prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Seismic intensity reached level 4 on Japan’s 7-point scale in parts of Mie Prefecture, Nara Prefecture, and Wakayama Prefecture, indicating moderate shaking but no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.
Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the tremor, and monitoring agencies continue to assess potential aftershocks and structural impacts in affected areas.
Japan, one of the world’s most earthquake-prone nations, maintains strict seismic monitoring systems to respond rapidly to such events.
