Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in Japan near Azumino, Azumino-Shi, Nagano, only 15 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Thursday, January 15th, 2026, at 2:48 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 85. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report, according to Volcano Discovery.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0.
