In a significant move, Danish shipping company "Maersk," one of the world's largest shipping firms, announced on Sunday the suspension of ship traffic in the Red Sea for 48 hours.
This decision comes in the wake of two attacks by Yemeni rebels on one of their commercial vessels.
The container ship, "Maersk Hangzhou," reported being targeted in a missile attack while transiting the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. Subsequently, it faced another assault from four boats affiliated with the Houthi rebels, who attempted to board the ship.
As a result of these incidents, "Maersk" has stated that it will "delay all transit operations in the region for the next 48 hours."
This development has raised concerns within the maritime industry and among global trade stakeholders, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the Red Sea region.
