Danish shipping gaint Maersk has begun deploying a new generation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices across its refrigerated container fleet, marking a major step in the company’s push to strengthen cargo visibility and improve cold chain logistics performance.
The rollout forms part of a broader digital transformation strategy aimed at standardizing connectivity systems across Maersk’s global operations and expanding real-time data access for customers transporting temperature-sensitive goods.
Maersk said it intends to equip its entire refrigerated container fleet with the new IoT devices over the coming years. The initiative follows the ongoing rollout of a new digital connectivity platform across approximately 450 vessels, designed to unify data transmission across the company’s shipping network.
The upgrade is expected to provide customers with more consistent and reliable real-time data throughout the entire container journey, reducing blind spots in shipment tracking and improving supply chain predictability.
According to the company, the new devices will strengthen its existing Captain Peter visibility solution, launched in 2019, by improving data availability and enabling more advanced analytical features.
These enhancements are expected to allow customers not only to track shipments more precisely but also to receive predictive insights and recommended actions based on live transport conditions.
Maersk said the improved system would play a key role in helping clients better manage temperature-sensitive cargo, where even minor disruptions can significantly impact product quality and commercial value.
The company described the investment as part of a wider digital strategy focused on improving cargo tracking, operational efficiency, and customer experience across its global logistics network.
