The Danish shipping giant Maersk announced on Friday, that it will temporarily reroute some of its voyages around the Cape of Good Hope, moving away from the Suez Canal transit corridor following unexpected operational challenges in the Red Sea region.
The container shipping group had last month begun a gradual return of some services to the Suez route, a move seen as critical to easing two years of global trade disruption triggered by attacks carried out by Yemen’s Houthi movement targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
However, the company said it is currently facing unforeseen constraints linked to the broader operational environment in the Red Sea.
“Following discussions with security partners, it has become clear that these constraints make it difficult to avoid delays when transiting the area,” the company said in a statement, without providing further details about the reasons behind the restrictions.
The decision highlights ongoing maritime security concerns in one of the world’s most important shipping corridors, where disruptions have continued to affect global trade flows.
