Global shipping giant A.P. Moller–Maersk has announced temporary operational changes affecting the return of empty containers across several Gulf markets, citing heightened security risks and operational uncertainty in the Middle East.
The company said the measure was introduced to protect vessels, crews, and cargo while ensuring the continued stability of shipping operations as geopolitical tensions disrupt maritime logistics across the region.
Under the temporary arrangement, Maersk will no longer accept empty containers from import shipments at their usual return locations in several countries affected by the ongoing security situation.
The measure applies to imports destined for United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia (including Dammam and Jubail), Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, and Oman (including Duqm).
Instead, customers have been instructed to return empty containers only to designated regional hubs until further notice.
Maersk identified several approved sites for returning empty containers including Salalah, Sohar, and Jeddah.
The company emphasized that these adjustments are temporary and will remain in place while it continues to closely monitor the evolving security and operational conditions in the region.
Maersk stated that the changes aim to maintain safe and stable operations while minimizing disruptions to cargo flows across the Gulf, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime trade corridors.
The move reflects growing concerns within the shipping industry about the impact of regional tensions on port operations, shipping routes, and supply chains.
Separately, Japanese container carrier Ocean Network Express (ONE) announced a series of operational adjustments across several Middle Eastern shipping routes.
The company said the rapidly evolving security situation has created exceptional operational and safety challenges for maritime trade in the region.
In response, ONE has implemented measures, including alternative shipping routes, operational schedule adjustments, as well as emergency contingency planning.
To improve transparency, the company has also launched a dedicated information page to provide customers with real-time updates on operational changes, service disruptions, and logistics guidance.
