On Thursday, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli emphasized the importance of upgrading Saint Catherine International Airport as part of the ongoing "Great Transfiguration" development project.
The airport expansion project aims to accommodate the expected increase in aviation traffic and the potential development of Saint Catherine city as a top religious and tourist destination.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister and his delegation visited Saint Catherine city to inspect the ongoing renovations at the airport. During the visit, the Assistant Head of the Engineers Department at the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, Ahmed Sorur, briefed the Prime Minister on the construction progress at the passenger and service buildings.
Sorur noted that the passenger building can handle up to 600 travelers per hour, and the terminal spans an area of 15,000 square meters.
The terminal includes departure, arrival, and VIP lounges, and a 32-meter-high air traffic control tower will be built at the airport.
Furthermore, the new runway will be 3,000 meters long, and an expanded apron with space for eight aircraft will raise the airport's capacity to accommodate up to 11 aircraft.
