Madagascar's President, Michael Randrianireina, announced the appointment of Maamitina Rajaonarisone, the official in charge of combating money laundering, as prime minister, just one week after dismissing the previous government without explanation.
Rajaonarisone is a former gendarmerie officer and a veteran government official who, since 2021, has headed the Financial Intelligence Service, which is responsible for combating money laundering and terrorist financing.
Observers believe his appointment aims to bolster the image of the new administration by entrusting the position to someone associated with fighting corruption and financial crime.
