Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has reportedly fled the country following weeks of mass anti-government protests and growing divisions within the military.
Opposition leader Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko told Reuters that staff at the presidential office confirmed Rajoelina’s departure, though his current location remains unknown.
The president’s exit follows widespread demonstrations, largely driven by young protesters who have been demanding his resignation.
French media reported that Rajoelina, who obtained French citizenship in 2014, was flown out of Madagascar aboard a French military aircraft under an arrangement with President Emmanuel Macron.
The development comes after Rajoelina accused a faction within the army of plotting a coup against him, signaling deepening instability in the Indian Ocean nation.
Rajoelina’s office announced that he would address the nation on Monday evening.
