In the post-Brexit row, French President Emmanuel Macron accused the UK of messing with his country's nerves.

"We didn't get what we wished for." "They're playing with our nerves," the French president remarked during a visit to the northern French town of Aulnoye-Ameries. "We are not going to give up."

"We will continue to fight," Macron said to reporters. "We will not abandon our fishermen."

While the European Commission conducted talks between the two sides, French threats were dropped, but  Macron appeared to suggest the talks were taking too long.

"The Commission must safeguard us," he said. It needs to finish this, but it's moving too slowly and weakly."

"If the Commission does not do its share, France will," he continued.

Lord Frost, the Brexit minister, met with Clement Beaune, the French Europe minister, and the European Commission to try to find a solution to the issue over small vessels.

However, the dispute has still to be resolved, and Paris has stated that consequences, such as a ban on British trawlers landing their catches in French ports and harsher customs procedures to stymie cross-Channel trade, are still "on the table" if a settlement cannot be reached.

The French have also threatened to cut off Jersey's power supply.

"This isn't a concern for France and the British, but a question of honouring your word," the president added, refusing to return to a bilateral debate.
