French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed that recognizing a Palestinian state is both a moral Duty and a political imperative, signaling a firmer stance by France amid growing international momentum for Palestinian statehood.
Speaking ahead of a highly anticipated United Nations conference in June, Macron raised alarm that France would harden its position toward Israel if tangible progress is not made on the humanitarian front.
“Recognition of the State of Palestine is not a taboo,” Macron said, reiterating a sentiment he previously voiced in February 2024. At the time, he emphasized the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Macron also stressed the importance of reforming and strengthening the Palestinian Authority to ensure it can assume full governance responsibilities across Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip.
In April 2025, the French president announced France’s intention to spearhead a coordinated international effort for the simultaneous recognition of both Palestinian and Israeli states.
He underscored that such recognition must occur at a “constructive moment,” rather than being driven solely by emotional or symbolic gestures.
Macron’s latest remarks reflect a shift in tone and policy, aligning France more closely with several European allies who have recently moved toward formal recognition of Palestinian statehood. The statement also comes as international pressure mounts for a renewed peace process in the Middle East.
