French President Emmanuel Macron reappointed Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister, the Élysée Palace announced late Friday, just days after Lecornu’s resignation following criticism of his new cabinet lineup.
Lecornu had initially been tasked by Macron last month with forming a new government after the French parliament voted down François Bayrou’s administration over a controversial austerity budget proposal.
Earlier this week, the Élysée unveiled Lecornu’s cabinet, which immediately sparked backlash for including several ministers from the previous government.
Facing mounting criticism, Lecornu tendered his resignation to the president.
According to the French daily La Nouvelle République, Lecornu now faces the daunting task of balancing political stability with economic reform, while managing pressure from rival parliamentary blocs and rising expectations from a disillusioned public.
