M6.9 Earthquake Strikes Chile

A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Chile on Monday, shaking the country’s northern regions without triggering a tsunami warning or causing immediate reports of major damage.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit the Atacama Desert area near Calama at a depth of around 100 kilometers.

Chile’s national disaster agency said there was no tsunami risk and confirmed that no serious injuries or significant destruction had been reported.

Residents across the regions of Arica, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, and Atacama felt strong tremors, while local media showed goods falling from supermarket shelves due to the intensity of the shaking.

Chile is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries because of its location along major tectonic plate boundaries.
