A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Indonesia on Tuesday, shaking parts of Sulawesi Island, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The shallow quake hit southeast of Palu in Central Sulawesi Province at 10:27 a.m. local time. Initial reports indicated no casualties or major damage.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said residents in Palu and Sigi felt strong tremors but confirmed there was no tsunami threat.

Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic zones.

The latest quake comes nearly eight years after a devastating 7.5-magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck Palu in 2018, killing more than 2,200 people.
