Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has warned the United States against interfering in Brazil's domestic politics, stressing that the country's upcoming presidential election is a matter for Brazilians alone.
Speaking at the G7+ summit in France, Lula said foreign governments should respect Brazil's sovereignty, drawing a comparison with US elections.
The remarks come as Lula campaigns for re-election in a closely watched race against Senator Flavio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party.
The dispute follows heightened tensions between Brasília and Washington after the US imposed tariffs on selected Brazilian imports and sanctioned members of Brazil's judiciary. The political row has intensified amid broader debates over foreign influence and democratic institutions in Latin America's largest economy.
Lula's comments underscore growing concerns within Brazil over external involvement in domestic political affairs ahead of the next presidential vote.
