BTS Wins MAMA’s Grand Awards, BLACKPINK Skips

K-pop band BTS won, Sunday, Album of the Year for Map of the Soul: 7, in Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) 2020, which is considered one its four Grand Awards.

Six members attended the event. One of them, Suga, didn't attend because he is recovering at home after an operation on his shoulder. However, the members called him on the phone during their winning speech on stage.

The trophy was presented to them by James Corden, who made a surprise appearance via a video message, saying: “I couldn’t be more proud of the recipients of this award. We have a special bond.”

“Their pre-release song was first performed right here on my show,” Corden added. “In many ways I am one of the members’ fathers as Papa Mochi so I am especially happy to announce the winner of 2020 MAMA of the year goes to BTS.”

They also won Worldwide Fans' choice award, Best Male Group, Best Music Video, Best Dance Performance Male Group for their hit song Dynamite, and Best Collaboration (IU x SUGA 'Eight').

With BTS, NCT, Mamamoo, Taemin, Monsta X, Oh My Girl, Ateez, Twice, Seventeen and  many more popular K-pop acted up for awards.

However, MAMA skipped BLACKPINK this year which made the girls group’s fans show their anger on social media. BLACKPINK hashtag trended on Twitter, attacking the award show.

K-pop has lately been the source of entertainment in the Arab World, young girls and boys became crazy over it. From watching performances on YouTube and Vlive, to buying tickets for the the bands’ movies in the cinema.

The boy band performed in Saudi Arabia last year, becoming the first foreign artists to play a solo stadium show there. They performed in front of a sell-out crowd at King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh on Friday evening.

“Were officially invited. It's been a while since we've performed in the Middle East - I guess the last time was 2015 in Dubai,” the band member Jimin said.  “To put it simply, if there's a place where people want to see us, we'll go there. That's how we feel."

The journey of obsession began with Korean drama, spreading songs, food and the south Korean culture itself.

Some people started  developing apps and dictionaries to teach the youth how to talk Korean, as a result to the frenzy of the Arab fans.
