Lithuania, one of the Baltic states, has announced that it has completely cut off gas imports from Russia, becoming the first of 27 European Union (EU) countries to eliminate its energy dependence on Moscow.
In a statement on its website, the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy said: "In pursuit of complete energy independence from Russian gas, and in response to blackmails about Russian energy in Europe and the war in Ukraine, Lithuania has completely abandoned Russian gas."
The ministry indicated - in its statement - that the measure entered into force this April, explaining that Lithuania managed to reduce its imports of Russian gas to zero yesterday, Monday, in a step that is considered a milestone in achieving energy independence in the former Soviet republic, which has a population of 2.8 million.
