Libya’s crude oil production reached its highest level in more than a decade, with output climbing to 1.44 million barrels per day, according to the head of the National Oil Corporation (NOC).

NOC Chairman Masoud Suleiman said on Sunday that the current production level marks the highest output recorded by Libya since 2013, reflecting improvements in the country’s oil operations.

The National Oil Corporation said the latest increase brings Libya closer to achieving its previously announced strategy of raising crude production to 1.5 million barrels per day.

The target is part of efforts to strengthen the country’s position as a major oil producer and increase revenues from its energy sector.

Libya holds some of Africa’s largest proven oil reserves, but production has frequently been affected by political instability, security challenges and operational disruptions.

The recent rise in output signals progress in restoring production capacity and improving the performance of key oil fields.

The oil sector remains a central pillar of Libya’s economy, providing the majority of government revenues and foreign currency earnings.
