More than180 illegal migrants, who were heading to Europe, were intercepted on Thursday by the Libyan coast guard and returned to the North African country's Mediterranean shores, The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

In a tweet on its official account, IOM said that the migrants were provided emergency assistance before being taken into detention centers.
"We maintain that the country is not a safe port and that the arbitrary detention of migrants must end."
