The Libya's head of the Al-Wefaq government in Tripoli, Fayez al-Sarraj, stressed the necessity of holding the next elections on time, regardless of the success or failure of the parties' agreement on the unified authority to conduct those elections.

This morning, his spokesman announced that Al-Sarraj will hand over power upon the completion of the dialogue rounds and the selection of a new executive authority, stressing that elections should be held at the end of next year, whether the interlocutors agree or not.

The UN mission to Libya had announced the agreement of the parties who met at the Libyan Dialogue Forum in Tunisia on the date of the next elections in the country (December 21, 2021), and their failure to reach an agreement on forming the government and the Presidential Council in the country.

Al-Sarraj stressed the importance of the United Nations assuming the task of supervising and organizing the elections logistically and on security, announcing at the same time the allocation of money to the High Electoral Commission, and harnessing all available capabilities to enable it to perform its work efficiently and professionally.

Earlier, the UN envoy to Libya, Stephanie Williams, announced that the parties agreed to continue the political dialogue because it is "the only solution to the Libyan crisis," and a new meeting to be held with the participants a week later via video technology, to complete the solution of the disputed points existing between the participating parties who represent the regions of Libya.
