The Scientific Committee of the General Authority for Search and Identification of Missing Persons in Libya has approved the DNA matching results for victims of Cyclone Daniel in the city of Derna. This decision was made during the committee's ongoing periodic meetings, chaired by Dr. Kamal Al-Siwi.
According to the results of the most recent meeting held yesterday, 30 previously unidentified individuals have been identified, including two Sudanese and Egyptian nationals.
The identified names have been referred to the Libyan Attorney General's Office, in accordance with applicable laws, for the necessary official procedures.
Cyclone Daniel in 2023 caused the deaths of thousands in the eastern Libyan city of Derna, according to the latest, albeit still preliminary, statistics. Thousands remain missing due to the flooding that engulfed the entire city. Landslides and the collapse of at least two dams exacerbated the humanitarian situation, resulting in the disappearance of approximately a quarter of the city's area on the Mediterranean coast.
