The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert warned on Friday of the danger posed by the war between Hezbollah and Israel to archaeological sites, especially in the eastern city of Baalbek and the southern city of Tyre, which have been subjected to heavy raids recently.

"Ancient Phoenician cities with deep roots in history are at grave risk of being destroyed," Hennis-Plasschaert wrote in a post on the X website, stressing that "Lebanon's cultural heritage must not become another victim of this devastating conflict."

The United Nations had warned on Wednesday of the damage that could befall the Lebanese city of Baalbek, which is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, stressing the need to protect cultural sites.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that cultural heritage, which cannot be restored, is often destroyed during conflicts. "UNESCO's cultural sites need protection," Dujarric said.

The 3,000-year-old Lebanese city of Baalbek is listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

This comes as an Israeli airstrike targeted the city of Baalbek, the largest city in eastern Lebanon, on Friday, according to the official Lebanese National News Agency.

Yesterday, Israel also bombed several sites in Baalbek, while Tyre was targeted repeatedly during the past week.
