The Lebanese caretaker government has accused the Israeli military of carrying out a "massacre" in Beirut’s southern suburbs after a recent Israeli airstrike resulted in 37 fatalities.
The strike, which targeted a densely populated area, has escalated tensions between the two countries.
In an official statement on Saturday, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health confirmed that the death toll had risen to 37.
The statement noted that rescue operations were ongoing to recover more victims from the debris, with the situation being continuously monitored. Lebanon's Health Minister, Firas Abiad, condemned the attack, stating, "Targeting civilians is a violation of human rights."
Lebanon's Minister of Public Works and Transport, Ali Hamieh, also condemned Israel, accusing the country of committing a massacre in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
This area, which is home to a significant portion of the city’s civilian population, has seen multiple Israeli strikes over the years, largely due to its association with Hezbollah.
In a separate announcement, Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of two of its commanders and 16 other members of the group in the Israeli airstrike.
The attack comes only days after Hezbollah faced another setback, with the destruction of thousands of its communication devices in explosions targeting its operations.
