Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and First Lady Neemat Aoun departed Beirut today, Saturday, heading to Washington, D.C., following an official invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a statement issued by the Lebanese Presidency.
A Lebanese-American summit is scheduled to be held at the White House.
The meeting between the two presidents is expected to focus heavily on the situation in southern Lebanon and the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories.
Lebanese President's approach will center on Washington’s role as a guarantor for Lebanon, relying on U.S. support to ensure the Israeli withdrawal.
According to the Lebanese newspaper Nidaa Al-Watan, the upcoming meeting between Trump and Aoun will reaffirm Lebanon's commitment to the "framework agreement" and the necessity of its implementation.
It will also underscore Beirut's sovereignty in negotiations and the commitment to ensuring that weapons remain exclusively in the hands of the state.
Furthermore, Aoun will hold talks and consultations with several U.S. officials to discuss the situation in Lebanon and explore avenues to cement the ceasefire, restore security and stability nationwide—particularly in the south—ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese areas, and extend state authority over all territories.
