The leaders of Germany, Portugal, and Spain have called on the French voters to support outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron against far-right leader Marine Le Pen in the crucial round of the presidential elections that will be held this weekend.
The three leaders' invitation involves an entirely unusual intervention in the internal politics of an EU member state.
A joint article by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, and Spain's Pedro Sanchez, published by the French daily Le Monde, stated that Sunday's decisive round "is not an election for Europe like any other."
The European leaders stressed that France must "choose between a democratic candidate and a far-right candidate who openly sided with those who attack our freedom and democracy."
